“Teamwork is the ability to work together toward a common vision. The ability to direct individual accomplishments toward organisational objectives. It is the fuel that allows common people to attain uncommon results.” – Andrew Carnegie
People say there’s no “I” in team. We disagree. A team is still only a group of individuals with their own identities. What makes a great team is the addition of the “holy grail” ingredient of the team identity.
We are sure that you want an efficient team, a team that delivers, a team that produces the results. Wouldn’t you also want that team to have a defining spirit, a burning passion and a presence all of its own? Wouldn’t you want people coming to you asking to join your team? Wouldn’t you want people to be devastated if they had to leave your team?
When you have people like this coming together, anything is possible.
At PLUS, we can work with your teams to define their own unique identities without compromising their individuality. We can get them talking to each other, not about each other. We are not prescriptive on how we can do this and are open to your suggestions. Our own ideas include any or all of:
1. A one-day workshop focused on defining the:
Characteristics of your perfect team
Terms of engagement and team manifesto
Current and aspirational team dynamics
Target audiences and the management of perceptions
Collective and individual responsibilities and relationships
2. Guided-facilitation of the teams’ team meetings to check the:
Team dynamics are on track
Missions are being accomplished
Messages are being received and understood
Whole is greater than the sum of the individual parts (i.e. that it’s working!)
3. Individual coaching of each team member to:
Individual identities in order to shape the team identity
Find and repair relationship cracks
Ensure individual goals are aligned with those of the team
Position the cascade of messages further down the line
In our experience, this kind of programme works really well with teams of no more than 8 although we can of course talk with you about how we might accommodate a greater requirement. Be prepared for lively and animated debate; being a member of an inspirational team is not for the faint-hearted!
“Conflict is inevitable in a team ... in fact, to achieve synergistic solutions, a variety of ideas and approaches are needed. These are the ingredients for conflict.” - Susan Gerke, IBM, Leadership Development
