What is a coach?

Our first thought is sports. All sports have coaches. The coach is the he or she on the sideline, watching, reacting and guiding. They provide guidance and support, challenge you when you are not working hard enough and listen when you feel confused or doubtful.

Coaches are people who are assessing and observing your skills and providing you feedback on how to improve. Coaches see and discover talents in people that even the people cannot see themselves. They make you practice. They help you reach your goals. They push your limits.
Business coaches and personal coaches do all these things focusing on where YOU want to go in your personal and professional life.
Athletes wouldn't think of not having a coach...why should you?

What's the difference between coaching, consulting, therapy and mentoring?

Consulting
There is some overlap between what a coach and a consultant provide, but the basic difference is the coach stays with the client to help implement the new skills, changes and goals, to make sure that they really happen. A well-trained coach is an expert in people and life/success dynamics.

Therapy

Coaching is not therapy. A therapist is trained and licensed to work with diagnosable psychological conditions. A coach is not. A coach and client typically focus on what the client wants to accomplish personally and/or business-wise. This may well involve looking at things from the past but will, in the main, look forward over the next 6-12 months.

Mentoring

Mentoring is usually when a colleague of greater skill or experience transfers that knowledge or skill to a colleague of lesser skill or experience. Mentoring is normally not a formal process, unlike coaching which focuses on achieving specific goals in a specified timeline. This does not mean that a coach cannot become a mentor.

Why do people hire a coach?

People hire a coach to make a change, reach a goal, solve a problem or take advantage of an opportunity.

How do coaching sessions work?

Every coaching session is focused directly on you - your needs, your goals, your wins, your aspirations, and your life. You set the agenda based on what is most important to you and you work in partnership with your coach on your plans and goals. Face to face coaching sessions will usually be scheduled for one hour (slightly longer for the first session), whereas phone coaching sessions will usually last about 30 minutes. Between scheduled sessions, you will have continued access to PLUS via email or brief phone calls if you have questions, need support or have fantastic news to share.

Why does coaching work?

Coaching works because you get the support, structure and accountability you need to make the changes you want.

What will happen when I use a coach?

Many things, but the most important are:
  • You will take yourself more seriously
  • You will take more effective and focused actions immediately
  • You will stop putting up with what is dragging you down
  • You will create momentum so that it's easier to get results
  • You will set better goals that are more exactly what YOU want

What is the main difference between business coaching and personal coaching?

Business coaching takes place with company professionals and we are typically empolyeed by the company.

Personal coaching takes places with anyone who is looking to make a change in some area of their life and we are employed directly by the individual.

Do you work on personal goals or business/professional goals?

Both actually. With the line between personal and business life blurring, we will be the only professionals trained to work with all aspects of you.

How can you coach effectively over the phone?

Coaching is very effective over the phone because there should be fewer distractions for either of us; you are likely to share more information sooner because of the anonymity factor. We are trained to listen well, hearing all the nuances of what is being said (and what is not). Coaching over the phone is the most convenient method of meeting.

Where do we first focus our efforts?

In many cases, you will already know what you want to accomplish or resolve and the coaching begins there. If you don’t but you know there is something that is causing you a problem or holding you back, then we will begin with a general conversation to uncover any barriers that may exist and go from there.

How do I know coaching is working?

If you are seeing measurable quality-of-life improvement, achieving your outcomes more quickly and/or having significant internal growth, coaching is working. If not, you may need to work with a different coach.

Do you give advice?

Sometimes. We will certainly look to help you expand your options in a situation. With us, you will receive coaching from an accredited NLP Practitioner which means that in general, you will be guided to reach your own solutions through exercises and questioning. However your own preferences, which are paramount, affect how much, if any, advice is provided.

How long would I work with you?

At PLUS, we recommend starting with a three month time-frame and all of our programmes are based around this time-frame as a minimum. After that, we simply suggest that you stay with us as long as you love the coaching and the results! We do of course, offer you the ability to bespoke what you want through Tandem if you want to “dip your toe in the water” to see what coaching has to offer.
